His sunflower is a copy.
Yamanbagiri has always known this. Vaguely. Somewhere at the back of his skull, where all his headaches trend to drift. His sunflower is hardly the only one of its kind. It had to have been made in a factory somewhere. Now, though, this is the first time he’s given this fact any sort of attention.
"Speaking of which, since that time everyone helped out to take care of the garden, I was thinking of how I could repay them. After all, they really didn’t have to, but they went to the trouble of getting soaked in the rain just to care for the flowers… I would ask if they have anyone they need to take revenge on, but everyone is strong enough to do that themselves."
"Aw, man, did he really go on sortie today?"
Kasen is tying his hair with one hand. With the other, he's rolling Mutsunokami's futon up so that he can air it outside. He looks at Kiyomitsu with a hairpin in his mouth and sighs – he could sound irritated, if not for the funny whistling.
"He did! And left me to tidy up," he says. "You're the only person who helps me instead of giving me more headaches, Kashuu."
"'Land is always on the mind of a flying bird',” Mikazuki reads. "Now what do you think of that?"
"Too predictable." Landing is for the weak.
"As long as you’re not tired of flying."
"Does the moon grow weary of being the sky?"
"Sometimes, yes."
This is menacing territory, Tsurumaru decides. He takes the fortune from Mikazuki, and eats it instead.
Mikazuki sets down his tea. "Perhaps it would be interesting to see who can grow the biggest pumpkin. Comparing one to the autumn moon is not without precedent."
"This father feels certain he could grow one bigger than that. It’s my duty after all, to look after those smaller than I," Kogarasumaru adds.
They trade serene, old man smiles, and that’s all it takes for Ookanehira to perceive a challenge. He drops his basket of veggies on the counter and grabs a fistful of slimy seeds out of the big pumpkin. "Then let’s see who can grow the biggest pumpkin!"
Akita and Aizen, after exhausting the contents of the Insect Diary, dragged him into the forest, taking it in turns to disappear and return with new specimens of cicadas, moths, caterpillars, and the occasional snake, each of which they dutifully showed to Kasen. He nodded with as gentle a smile as he could at the eight consecutive variations of flying cockroach Aizen had brought for his and Akita's approval, and when the two unearthed a pit of wriggling maggots, he excused himself, saying that he needed to help with dinner.
